Coffee & Conversation (Note Time and Location)

  • Broadway Armory 5917 North Broadway Chicago, IL, 60660 United States (map)

Our previous location, Rewired Café, was damaged by fire in July, so our coffee and conversations will shift to the Broadway Armory dining room and will start at 9 a.m. Meet up with us there for lively exploration of each week’s topics.

Join hosts John Williams and Tom Murphy as the group explores interesting and sometimes controversial topics. Each week’s discussion is typically accompanied by some readings you’ll receive in advance via email. Topics for the subsequent week are decided at the previous discussion. This week’s topics are both about the US Supreme Court:

We’ll discuss the legal reasoning and practical implications of two of the Court’s most consequential decisions of the 2022-2023 term:

  • Racial diversity in higher education [STUDENTS FOR FAIR ADMISSIONS, INC. v. PRESIDENT AND FELLOWS OF HARVARD COLLEGE]

  • Racial fairness in the Alabama legislative reapportionment process, including Alabama’s apparent intent to defy this ruling [ALLEN, ALABAMA SECRETARY OF STATE, ET AL. v. MILLIGAN ET AL.]

Should the Supreme Court adopt a code of ethics and mandate financial reporting for its members?

If you are interested in participating in our discussions but are not on our distribution list, send an email to tjm2040@rcn.com and we will add you to the list.
