Zoe Ma will talk about growing up in a working-class Hui Muslim family in Shenyang, China, a sister city of Chicago. She received a free college education in China and went to work in Beijing after graduation. She participated in the 1989 Tiananmen Movement demanding equal access to economic opportunities. She came to Chicago for graduate school in 1994 and is a U.S. citizen now. She will describe the changes she witnessed in the living standards of Chinese due to a market economy with a socialist wealth distribution system.
