Coffee & Conversation has returned to in-person meetings. The venue is the open-air patio of Rewired Pizza Café, 1100 W Thorndale, at the corner of Winthrop. Can’t make it in person? Register and you’ll receive the Zoom link for this discussion.
The café has a variety of typical breakfast baked goods as well as a number of more substantial breakfast dishes. The coffee menu features locally roasted coffee beans and hand-crafted flavors.
Each week’s discussion is typically accompanied by some readings you’ll receive in advance via email. Topics for the subsequent week are decided at the previous discussion. This week’s topics are:
Do we need to “update” elementary and secondary school curriculums to adapt to changing times? If so, how? In the past we revised how to teach reading, introduced ‘new math’ and minimized home economics and “shop”. What might we revise now: Civics? Digital knowledge & skills? Racial equity? Gender tolerance? Financial management skills? Others? Who should make those decisions: Parents? Educators? Legislatures?
Climate Change: Why is it happening? What are possible countermeasures and their limitations? What's the utility of partial success? What's the time frame available? What happens when we get to zero net greenhouse gas emissions? Will mankind and current civilization survive in recognizable and psychologically “acceptable” terms?
Register at least two days in advance by sending an email to tjmurphy4@comcast.net. You will then be sent the suggested readings and the Zoom link in case you are not able to attend in person.
