Coffee & Conversation (Live and Virtual)

  • Rewired Pizza Cafe & Bar 1100 West Thorndale Avenue Chicago, IL, 60660 United States (map)

Join hosts Tom Murphy and John Williams at Rewired Café and enjoy locally roasted coffee and delicious breakfast items. Each week’s discussion is typically accompanied by some readings you’ll receive in advance via email. Topics for the subsequent week are decided at the previous discussion. This week’s topics are:

  1. Is any age “too old” for someone to be the President; or an airline pilot or surgeon or police officer or Supreme Court Justice? What about NFL quarterback? When does mandatory retirement make sense, if ever? Might a “still” competent older person ever have a moral duty to cede his/her place to a younger replacement? In general, how should society evaluate its older members, for jobs or for other contributions to the common good? Have you ever been judged unfairly for being “too old”? Finally, what is best explanation for why our society provides preferential treatment of its older citizens through Social Security + Medicare, etc.?

  2. Head Contact sports: What ethical issues do spectator enjoyment and support of sports such as boxing, football and soccer raise? What should be done?

If you are interested in participating in our discussions but are not on our distribution list, send an email to tjmurphy4@comcast.net and we will add you to the list.
