This program explores the Roman conquest of Spain through the lens of “The Fiery War.” In this brutal ancient conflict, tough Spanish warriors repeatedly defeated the Roman legions in battle. Public opinion soured back in Rome, and some Roman citizens dodged the draft to avoid military service in Spain. Under immense political pressure to end the war, Roman commanders increasingly engaged in atrocities—often with disastrous results—and ultimately it took over 15 years to pacify Spain. This ancient “endless war” offers us a dark reflection of the United States’ military quagmires in the 20th and 21st centuries. Presenter: Gabriel Baker, PhD.
