The First Chicagoans

Before Chicago was the City of Neighborhoods or the City that Works it was native ground. American Indian people made Chicago their home and played a role in founding the city only to be forcefully removed in the 1830s. This illustrated program surveys the long history of native Chicago including the treaty era, the federal urban relocation program of the 1950s, and the continuing role of Indigenous people in Chicago’s urban mosaic. Presented by Ted Karamanski, Ph.D, Professor of History and Public History Director at Loyola University Chicago where he teaches courses in American Indian history, the Civil War, and public history.
