What if what you always imagined you would have, hoped for, counted on you did not get? You expected that promotion, but it didn’t happen. You assumed you would be in a forever relationship but weren’t. You thought you would retire at fifty but couldn’t.
Award-winning author Nancy Schlossberg calls these unachieved expectations “non-events.” Faced with such disappointments, we often blame ourselves, thinking that, if only we had been better, we would have received the prize. “Non-events” like these, says Schlossberg, are a seldom-studied life transition.
In this program, Schlossberg will identify such unmet goals and offer ways to rid ourselves of the “blame game.” To do that, we need to engage in what she calls “The Dream Reshaping Process.”
Now 94 years old, Schlossberg is Professor Emerita, University of Maryland, where she taught counseling for 27 years. She has authored numerous books on the various stages of life, including Too Young to Be Old; Revitalizing Retirement: Reshaping Your Identity, Relationships, and Purpose; and most recently a memoir, My Path, My Transitions.
This program is offered in partnership with LiveAgeWell (Living and Aging Well in Edgewater).
