Community policing was a hot topic in the recent election. This Academy is a six-week program designed to give seniors an overview of the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies in Cook County. The curriculum offers participants an in-depth look at law enforcement agency operations, as well as specific crime prevention methods, including personal safety, gang and drug awareness, home protection and avoiding scams and con games. Refreshments will be served and all participants will be honored at a graduation ceremony and reception.
July 19 - Welcome and overview of the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and the Sheriff’s Police Department.
July 26 - Crimes against the elderly and senior safety. Personal safety, identity theft, telemarketing scams, con games and elder abuse.
Aug. 2 - 911 vs. non-emergency calls and an overview of the Communications Unit. Patrol Procedures. Crime Scene processing and fundamentals of an investigation.
Aug. 9 - Gangs and illegal drugs in Cook County; awareness and prevention. Overview of the Gang Crimes Unit and the Narcotics Unit. K-9 Demonstration.
Aug. 16 - Court services, Corrections and alternative incarceration programs. An overview of the Sheriff’s Court Services Department & Civil Process Division. Overview of the Cook County Jail, Divisions ! - XI and Alternative Incarceration Programs.
Aug. 23 - Local Community Policing programs and graduation. Understanding community policing and forming a Neighborhood Watch. Graduation Ceremony and reception.
